Unity and The Secret

Whether you have been coming to Unity for a while, or you’re new here, here is a bit of background on Unity’s roots that you may find interesting, and the connection to the message in The Secret

The popularity of the movie The Secret has been growing steadily since late summer 2006 and has been an underground, word-of-mouth, unstoppable, life-altering, mind-opening experience to many! Wings Bookstore previewed The Secret to a full house at First Unity in September and then again in November. We could barely keep up with demand for the DVD during the Christmas season, and sales have soared to almost 900 movies at this writing. We watched with anticipation as a few network TV shows began featuring it in the fall. Then came Oprah. After she exposed it on two entire broadcasts in one February week, The Secret was no longer a “secret.”

Why is Unity smiling with pride at the awakening that The Secret reveals? Is The Secret Unity’s? Did they invent it? Have they been hiding it? Who started all this?

Whether you have been coming to Unity for a while, or you’re new here, here is a bit of background on Unity’s roots that you may find interesting, and the connection to the message in The Secret

Unity is the largest (over 2 million members worldwide) organization in what is called New Thought, a set of religious ideas that developed in the U.S. during the late 19th century. Not to be confused with “New Age,” which arrived about 100 years later, we believe that God is the universal presence of creative energy, and it is within the world and within all people. We place emphasis on positive thinking, affirmations, meditation, and prayer. Unity’s central teaching is that thought evolves and unfolds, and thinking creates one’s experience of the world. We have been using and teaching the principles of the Secret’s law of attraction for 100 years. William Walker Atkinson, the editor of New Thought Magazine, wrote a book titled Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World, which is associated with the thinking behind the phenomena of The Secret. It was published in 1906.

At Wings, you will find an entire section that focuses on the law of attraction, or the co-creation process. Among the selections are New Thought and Unity classics, as well as more contemporary offerings. May we suggest:
